FAILING FORMATIONS

There is a recurring theme building through domestic and European exploits, and its not forming a very pretty pattern. In fact, that could sum up the system that was deployed yesterday too.
Walter changed things around from the midweek heroics into a system that was set up to accommodate the inclusion of Hemdani. The three Lyon killers from that game were also sidelined as Boyd, Adam and Whittaker were given another chance to step up to the plate and create an impression on there manager, but like the formation, they failed quite miserably.
To this minute, I still can’t understand the full reasoning behind a 4-5-1 formation especially when we’re playing at home and hopefully this will have logged into the memory of Walter and co for the games to come. If the midweek hangovers are going to continue, we’re going to be in for some terrible results in the near future.

Today’s team: -

McGregor: - Will be disappointed that one of the few chances that Hibs had ended in a bit of a hash and a goal. Other than that he had very little to do.
Rmed Verdict: - 5

Hutton: - It says a lot about the day when our best attacking outlet was Hutton. His strong running was a threat down the right flank.
Rmed Verdict: - 7 (MOTM Gave us a bit of drive)

Cuellar: - Had little to do for much of the game, which is little surprise given that we had, pretty much, a ten man defensive unit.
Rmed Verdict: - 6

Weir: - Like Cuellar, was solid enough, and very unlucky not to bring us back on level terms late on in the game.
Rmed Verdict: - 6

Papac: - Had a tough game against the very pacey Donaldson but coped aptly with the threat, his problem, once again, was the terrible distribution.
Rmed Verdict: - 5

Whitaker: - Is he really a player suited to the right midfield berth? His confidence is at a big low and maybe his more natural right back position is calling, could Hutton and Whitaker switch places?
Rmed Verdict: - 4

Bazza: - Tried to push forward as much as possible to help out lone striker Boyd but never really got going at all. Had one rasping shot that came close.
Rmed Verdict: - 6

Hemdani: - If he wanted to make an impression on his manager to start the SPL games, he didn’t make a big enough impact today. Neat and tidy at the back but offered little to nothing going forward.
Rmed Verdict: - 5

Thommo: - We got pretty much the usual from Thommo, he chased and harried his opponents but needs to get a bit more composure on the ball too and start to help the forward momentum of the team.
Rmed Verdict: - 5

Adam: - Not as influential a player on the left flank and not as comfortable either. Tried hard to make an impact but there was a lack of quality on the end product, with the odd exception.
Rmed Verdict: - 5

Boyd: - Never got a sniff or looked like getting one. Whether that was due to his isolated position, lack of quality service or just lack of quality is one that is well up for debate.
Rmed Verdict: - 5

Naismith (On for Whitaker): - Added a bit of spark, but not enough.
Rmed Verdict: - 4

McCulloch (On for Thommo): - The formation changed with these substitutions but it was too little too late.
Rmed Verdict: - 4

Cousin (On for Boyd): - Couldn’t rescue the game for the Gers.
Rmed Verdict: - 4

Smith: - How quickly the pendulum swings. From hero to villain in a matter of days. I wonder how long the rotation process will keep going now……
Rmed Verdict: - 4

It wasn’t so long ago that Walter Smith was the Domestic God and the European nightmare. Something has changed big style but he needs to recapture the SPL gift, and quickly.
